Montreal!

American Anthropological Association held its 110th meeting in Montreal.

I traveled with two of my fellow grad students by first flying to Vermont and then driving up to Montreal.  The drive was absolutely gorgeous.  Montreal is a very delightful city bringing together a very European and American feel simultaneously.  The street art and architecture are both colorful and classy in an urban neo-gothic sort of way.

The conference itself has turned out to be very fruitful, I have some very interesting new concepts and theories to look into that I believe will push my research in the right direction.  That said, this has been a very tiresome trip.  My first time attending the AAAs, I definitely feel like the conference is far too big to being truly enjoyable.  Perhaps if I knew more people, however, it seems even the people I do know I’ve been doing well to see even once.  I suppose another element damping my spirits is the fact that I am all too aware of the massive pile of work awaiting me.  With Thanksgiving Break, and the familial expectations of far more traveling than is advised, I am apprehensive about the weeks to come.

Why Leave Home?

Polls Please!  Take my poll if you have time.

Most people have a comfort zone, a happy little world full of the things and people they like and know.  Sure teenagers bemoan the boredom of home and desire to leave it behind as soon as possible but many people are content.  There are some people who never leave the county they grew up in or the vast metropolitan area they were born into.  However, my kindred are the wandering souls that feel stifled when staying at home turns to stagnation.

So for those of you out there that dare to step outside into the great unknown this blog is for you.  *No, I don’t mean people flying from metroplex to metroplex in a designer suit propagating corporate America doesn’t count* but people who chose to truly open your eyes.

Entry into the Great Unknown

Stormy Travels

This is the genesis of my online travel journal.  My means of sharing my adventures and reflections with the world.  The world very well may not be listening, but my Mamaw always encouraged me to write about the places I went to and the people I saw.   She was convinced that it was vitally important for me to capture these memories and share with other what I learned from my opportunities to step outside my comfort zone and see the world with a fresh set of eyes.  So in honor of my Mamaw, I hope to share my travels and what I’ve learned along the way.
